The Failure Red Mage is Unmatched in Sage Time - Chapter 1
Creak… With a creaking sound, an old wooden door opened. At that moment, bustling noises could start to be heard from the opening of the door. Some people were drinking, some were eating, some were talking with their party, and some were even quarrelling. In other words, it was another typical day in the Adventurer’s Guild. However, all of that felt so far away from me.
Right after I left the [Room of Blessing], I looked around the Guild-managed bar, and finally found the table I was looking for. My steps were strangely wobbly, even though I haven’t had even a sip of liquor.
“How was it, Leon?”
Wolf, a [Holy Knight], which was an advanced class from [Warrior], as well as the leader of our party, Wolf Fang Blade Dance, seems to have noticed and called me out without so much as a glance. I didn’t really like his manner, but I knew that he was at least paying attention since I noticed his beast ears were pointing towards me.
“It was not good…”
Even with all the noise in this place, I could hear Wolf’s sigh clearly…
“Then as per our agreement, you’re fired, Leon.”
When I heard that word, I could feel blood run cold. No way! Anything but that…!!
“P-Please, I’m begging you! I’ll do anything you want, so please don’t fire me!!”
“No can do.”
I immediately went around him and bowed down, but all I got was his cold, emotionless response.
“You should have realized it by now, but you’re a burden to us, Leon.”
I raised my head to see whose voice that was. I saw Rebecca, a female member of our party who sat in front of Leon, smiled at me coldly. Her class was a [Heavenly Archer] by the way, an advanced class of [Archer]. She was actually five years older than me, but thanks to her Elf blood, she still looks like she is in her teens. However, her experience was pretty much appropriate to her ages, so when she was looking down at me with a smirk plastered on her face, it felt strangely erotic, I don’t know why.
“Please! I’ll do anything!! I’ll even do the chores for you guys?!”
“Oh my? Aren’t you already doing that for us though?” Said Rebecca while giggling and making fun of me. Damn her…!!
“I-I don’t mind if you guys reduce my share of the rewards too!! So please…!!”
Wolf Fang Blade Dance was the only B Rank Adventurer’s Party in town. So obviously, I didn’t want to stop being a member of a party that was almost A rank!
“Please understand, Leon. We can’t keep advancing while protecting you like usual.”
A graceful, handsome man now tried to persuade me. He’s Lloyd, a [Great Mage], which was an advanced class from [Black Mage], as well as a genuine Elf. Dang it, how am I supposed to argue with him if he used a sound argument with such a gentle tone..? My gaze then landed on Chelsea, our [Assassin], which was an advanced class from [Scout].
“W-What?! Y-You should know just how weak you really are, shouldn’t you?!” She said, while trying her hardest not to meet my gaze, which was good for me since I didn’t really like her anyway. Despite the fact that she was always timid around everyone else, she would always say rude things to me.
Now that I took a good look at our table, there was a boy I’d never seen before sitting with them. He seemed to be very interested in our conversation too. I was curious about him, but there were more important things for me right now.
“T-Then, what about your luggage, healing, and support? There aren’t many people who can do it alone like me…!”
I kept appealing to them without stopping.
“Sure, I might not be much help at battle, but at least I don’t think I’m that bad with both sword and magic…!!”
“You don’t need to worry about that. Oh, right. Might as well introduce him to you now.”
Wolf, who had started to get annoyed by my appealing, finally turned his head to me, and then looked at the boy sitting with them. Could it be that he had something to do with this…?
“You know Doga from Flame Whirlwind was retiring, right?”
“Err, yeah… I mean, it was a hot topic for a while after all…”
“Good. Thanks to that, several young members from their party became free agents now. And since this guy is pretty talented, I brought him with me.”
“Come, Noel-chan. Give your greetings to your senior for the last time.”
Damn you, Rebecca! Could you not talk in a way that will grind my gears…?!
“Err, hello sir! Wait, is it better if I say “Farewell” instead?”
The boy who went by the name of Noel said as he stood up.
“Welp, I guess it doesn’t really matter. My name is Noel, a [Priest]! Nice to meet you, Senior!”
“Eh? Ah, sure, nice to meet you. I’m—…”
“It’s fine. No need to introduce yourself, Senior. I mean, it’s not like we’re going to meet again anyway. Besides, I have a hard time remembering people’s names, you see.”
“I-Is that so…”
That annoyed me a bit, but getting angry and making my impression here worse was something that I wanted to avoid. Looking at him, Noel is probably in his early teens. I mean, you could clearly hear his voice is still creaking. And a boy that age, was already a [Priest], which is an advanced class from [White Mage]? That’s impressive.
“This guy was originally a [Luggage Carrier] in Flame Whirlwind, but Old Man Doga realized this boy’s potential, so he let him changed his class into a [White Mage].”
“I didn’t know about it either, but it seems like my distant ancestor has Gnome’s blood or something.”
And he has a special bloodline too? Damn it. I’m so jealous… Surely, a normal [White Mage] can’t just hold a candle to a [Priest], however…!
“By the way, what’s your [Luggage Carrier]’s level, Noel-kun?”
“Ahaha, ‘Noel-kun’? You’re embarrassing me here, Senior… Anyway, my [Luggage Carrier]’s level, right? It’s 10, Senior.”
“Oh? Mine is at 20, you know?! See, guys?! Even my <Storage> capacity is bigger than hi—”
“Ahahaha! Is he for real?”
Just as I was about to continue my appeal, Noel started to laugh uncontrollably.
“I mean, what good is it for an adventurer to raise their common class to the limit anyway?”
“B-But, my <Storage> capacity is—”
“What do you think a Magic Bag is for, Leon?”
<Storage> was an exclusive skill for [Luggage Carrier] that lets you store your items in another dimension without even feeling the weight. If you raised its level to the limit, it could even prevent the item’s deterioration, so it was pretty convenient for new adventurers. However, there was an item called Magic Bag, that has the exact same effect as <Storage> that you could buy if your Adventurer’s Rank wass high enough. And conveniently, Wolf Fang Blade Dance was rich enough to buy several of those Magic Bags.
It’s as if I don’t have any more use for this party… However, a half-baked guy like me didn’t have anywhere else to go…!
“P-Please…! I’m begging you!!”
That was why I didn’t hesitate even a bit to bow before them. I heard some giggling and sighs, but at the moment, I didn’t care about it..
“I promise that I’ll do shopping and equipment maintenance better than before! Heck, I’ll even do delivery jobs that I’ve never done before!!”
“D-Don’t you have any shame?!”
I heard Chelsea shout, but I ignored her. Of course I’m ashamed of doing all of this!! However, I was that desperate and didn’t have a choice anymore.
I heard a chair rattle. And then, I could sense that Wolf was kneeling beside me.
“Shopping? Maintenance? We can just split up and ask for the store to do it for us. It’s not like we’re so poor that we need to haggle over the prices every time anyway. And what, you want to do the delivery jobs? Like hell we’d let you do such an important job, idiot.”
After saying that, Wolf lightly tapped my shoulder.
“We’ve been accompanying you level up for what, two years now, haven’t we? Isn’t it enough already?”
It was hard to say anything when he put it like that… After all, in order to search for the right requirements for the Class Change, I’d been raising various beginner level combat classes to the beginner limit, Level 20, and they had been kind enough to accompany me with that up until now. However, I’ve raised my last combat class to level 20 today, and I still couldn’t change my class.
“Can you please let us go already, Leon?”
Stop make it sound as if I’m the wrong one here, goddammit!!
“Hehe, look at him trembling… Wait, don’t tell me… Is he crying right now?”
And as if confirming what Rebecca just said, I finally realized that my cheeks had been wet for a while now. It feels sad, vexing, and more importantly, so pathetic…
“Gross! I’m leaving now!!” Chelsea shouted, unlike your typical [Assassin] as she turned to leave. I mean, it was not like I wanted you guys to see me in my pathetic state either, you know…
“Ahahaha! What a pathetic adult!”
Damn you, Noel brat! Stop laughing at me..!!
“Hey, stop laughing. You’re being rude to Leon.”
But Lloyd, that kind of pity was what hurts me the most, you know?
“I-I’m begging you..!!”
I shouted as I raised my face that had become a mess from all the tears and snot.
“I already have some good candidates in mind! Now all I have to do is to fulfil the condition and…”
“You’ve already raised them all to the limit, and they were all no good, weren’t they?”
“B-But I still have my common classe—…”
“And you expect us to accompany you until you raise them all?! Just how many common classes do you think there are, goddammit?!”
I flinched at Wolf’s angry words. Damn, I’m pathetic, am I not?
“Sigh… Leon, sit down here.”
Wolf sighed heavily. Then he grabbed my arm and made me sit on the chair he was using earlier. At the same time, all the remaining members stood up from their chairs and started to leave.
“We’ll be leaving first.”
As I tried to stop them, a waitress suddenly appeared before me and started to line up one dish after another. Salad, soup, steak, bread, and of course, a bottle of wine. I can assure you that all of them are the best things that can be ordered in this bar. Perhaps it was the scent of the luxurious food, but my stomach started to rumble without my permission, even at a dire time like this.
“You haven’t had dinner, have you?”
Wolf’s sudden gentle tone surprised me to no end.
“Even if you’re not so useful right now, we’re still indebted to you for when we had just started this adventurer thing, Leon. That’s why, think of this as our gratitude.” Said Rebecca while smiling kindly at me. Come to think of it, how long has it been since the last time I saw a kind smile on her face, I wonder.
“Even though we have to part ways today, as long as you continue being an adventurer, I’m sure that we can meet again someday. So I hope that we can stay friends until that day, Leon.”
You sure didn’t change at all, Lloyd. And I’m really glad for that.
“Today’s our treat, so make sure you enjoy it.”
Now that they’ve done this much to me, I felt more and more pathetic clinging to their legs. I guess I really don’t have any other choice but to give up, huh…?
“You’d better eat it before it gets cold, Senior.”
“…I guess you’re right.”
How strange. Even though I was so annoyed with this brat earlier, he somehow looked a bit cute, now that he’s talking to me with a gentle tone. Damn, am I really such an easy guy…?
“Wolf, it’s about time for the Carriage to come.”
Carriage…? So they’re planning to leave this town today, huh…
“It’s too bad. To be honest, I actually want you to come along too, you know? Farewell, Leon.”
Could it be that if I succeed in changing my class, they would take me with them then? I mean, that’s the only thing his words could mean, right?
“Thank you for everything…”
I said that as I lowered my head, which has become another mess with tears. Not too long after that, I raised my head, and I could no longer see Wolf or the others.
“Alright then… I guess I should eat this before it gets cold…”
After seeing off the Wolf Fang Blade Dance’s members, I started to eat the food before me. The salad is pretty fresh and crispy, and the meat was a bit chewy, but at the same time, it was incredibly tender. The dressing and the sauce poured on top of them was pretty delicious too. And I’m sure, the soup and the wine that I haven’t touched yet, would definitely taste amazing too.
However, eating such luxurious food alone somehow just didn’t taste as good as I would have imagined.
